Sirapop Wongsorn
b. 1987, currently works and lives in Chiang Mai, Thailand
From a young age, printmaker and multimedia artist Sirapop, was inspired by the ‘story time’ spent with his father, where he spent countless hours drawing animals in the Thai countryside. Sirapop held on to this early passion by continuing his study of art at Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna – Chiang Mai. Sirapop’s talent in printmaking gained him recognition in University and he was later offered a job as a printmaker at Chiang Mai Art on Paper (C.A.P. Studio). At C.A.P. studio Sirapop was able to refine his skills as a printmaker, working with hundreds of domestic and international artists over the course of ten years. Creating prints using a wide variety of techniques and styles developed Sirapop’s own artistic process. While Sirapop developed his skill and experience and broadened his network of artist, he never lost touch with his original inspiration- the love felt spending time in his childhood drawing with his father. This journey from an early artist to a professional printmaker has led to various exhibitions, both in Thailand and abroad such as “Northern Print” group exhibition in Chiang Mai, “The Jeju Art Tour” South Korea, and his latest exhibition “Look at me” at The Meeting Room Art Gallery, Chiang Mai.
Sirapop continues working as a printmaking technician at C.A.P. studio on a daily basis. Day-by-day he continues to develop his techniques and his own experience as an artist. Creating and developing his lived experiences from early childhood to today- over the years his art works serves journal entries in the life of an Artist.
Birth Year Beliefs
Birth Year Beliefs reflects the artist’s personal connection to the precious memories of the Songkran festival and the New Year in northern Thailand, a time when family reunions and traditional rituals bring peace and joy. Through the act of offering tung of the 12 zodiac animals, which symbolize different aspects of life and relationships, Sirapop explores the concept of zodiac years as representations of self and connection. The work uses these cultural symbols to evoke feelings of love, friendship, and harmony, transporting viewers to a time of reflection and spiritual devotion.
